On November 9th, 2023, Thai Special Investigation officers launched a search operation on cold storage units that stored over 75 tonnes of unidentified animal carcasses in Mueang, Samut Sakhon.
Mr. Chaiya Promma, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, publicly revealed the result of the search operation and stated that there were more than 75 tonnes of unidentified pork linked to a previous confiscation of 161 containers in Leam Chabang, Chonburi. The accused involved in this case is currently on the run.
However, it was reported that some portions of imported pork from abroad were approved by Australia and Netherlands authorities. A thorough investigation would be conducted to determine whether it was permitted according to Thai law or not.
Related documents from the owners must be presented to Thai government officials about the 75 tonnes of unidentified pork stored inside cold storage units.
Chaiya further emphasized that it is under investigation on an allegation that Thai livestock checkpoint officials may be involved in bribery as a way to import illegal meat to Thailand.
