Famous whistleblower turned anti-cannabis campaigner Chuwit Kamolvisit has set up what he calls the Center of Anti-Cannabis (CAC) in protest of the Bhumjai Thai Party’s cannabis legalization policy.
The Center of Anti-Cannabis (CAC) was established to raise public awareness of cannabis in Thailand, according to Chuwit.
He said Anutin Charnvirakul, the leader of the Bhumjai Thai Party, has changed his stance on cannabis from the past as he once promised a liberal cannabis policy but now only said the plant was for medical purposes only. However, according to Chuwit, there is widespread recreational use especially in tourism areas which was not the intention of decriminalization of marijuana.
Chuwit also alleged that more than 80% of the cannabis in Thailand is being smuggled in from America, and has a high THC content which makes it more suitable for recreational use than the low-THC cannabis that is grown in Thailand for medical purposes. This also hurts Thai farmers, Chuwit added.
Marijuana is causing more harm than good to the public, and Chuwit will continue to campaign against it even after the May 14 election, according to him.
Chuwit is pushing for the plant to be returned to being listed as a narcotic, which essentially would shut down thousands of marijuana shops across Thailand and return the plant to only being allowed to use under the strictest of permission for medical reasons.
