61-Year-Old Man Drowns in Reservoir in Chonburi

Chonburi —

An 61-year-old Thai man tragically drowned in a Chonburi reservoir while harvesting lotus roots.

Sawang Boriboon emergency responders and police officers rushed to the Huai Luek reservoir on Sunday, March 12th, after they were alerted to a suspected drowning man. The reservoir spanning about 10 rais is situated in the Khao Mai Kaeo sub-district of Banglamung District, Chonburi.

Upon inspection, the authorities found one pair of sandals and a Yamaha Spark motorbike parked near the edge of the reservoir. The items belonged to the missing man, his wife, who accompanied the officers, Mrs. Srinual Uansomboon, 51, asserted.

Mrs. Srinual told The Pattaya News that her husband drove off from the house around 5 PM the day before. He told her that he wanted to go pick up some lotus roots at the reservoir to cook Kaeng Som, but he had never come back.

After the rescue team began searching under the water for three minutes, the man’s dead body was found submerged at the bottom of the reservoir. He was identified as the missing husband, Mr. Wichien Kongkaew, 61. The victim suffered a wound on the left side of his lips and had been deceased for at least 12 hours, the rescue team stated.

The police suspected that the deceased man may have climbed onto a water pump, but slipped and hit his face on the pump, causing him to fall into the water and drown. However, his body was sent for a forensic examination at the Police Hospital to determine the actual cause of death.
