5 drown in Nakhon Si Thammarat floods; transportation crippled

Two more people died today in the Thai south due to heavy rains and flash flooding, raising the death toll to five, according to the provincial administration of Nakhon Si Thammarat. 

Gov. Kaisorn Wisitwong confirmed this morning that five people have died so far from the floods, which began Tuesday, while more than half a million residents have been affected.

The five victims were in the districts of Noppitam, Phra Phrom Chalerm Phra Kiat and Chawang.

The hardest-hit areas include Nakhon Si Thammarat city, Phra Phrom, Chian Yai, Chalerm Phra Kiat, Tha Sala and Thung Song. Train travel in the south has been impacted, with several services canceled. The Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport as of this morning is still operating as usual; however, flights bound to the airport are likely to be delayed or canceled.
