2 killed after U-turn bridge on Rama II Road collapses

Two people were killed on Sunday night when a beam from a U-turn bridge on Rama II Road collapsed. 

At around 8pm Sunday, a 10-meter long concrete beam and its concrete rail guard fell onto three vehicles underneath. The accident killed a car passenger and an employee of the Highways Department while two others were injured and sent to a hospital.

The U-turn flyover bridge was built in 1993 and has been used for nearly 30 years. It’s been under repair since June 23 and was scheduled to have its maintenance completed in August, according to Highways Department director Sarawut Songsivilai.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has ordered a committee to probe the incident and report the result within two weeks.

The flyover, which is also undergoing maintenance, is located in front of Vibharam Hospital on Rama II Road. The incident caused traffic jams on Sunday…
